Basic gercamp in beautiful valley next to old communist resort Nov 10, 2012
N48°50'30.9" E103°23'10.4" When leaving Bulgan City in the direction of the airport, follow the road until the ANAG sign. Turn left and follow the bumpy road until the hotel & gercamp.
The hotel & gercamp is in a beautiful valley with opportunities for nice strolls along tree lines and mountain streams. Discovered for its beauty many years ago, it is now a time capsule of a former period in Mongolian history. The hotel is from the Russian dominated era with its own defunct power station. Belonging to the former ruling party, it offered important party members a nice retreat from official duties. But these times are over and the hotel doesn't reflect its glory days and the standard the party set in those days anymore. Modern standards do not apply either and the last renovation can't stop the decay. Maintenance is superficial.
During the holiday season its guests are mainly employees of the airline company MIAT, who receive a free 10-day voucher from the company to stay in the hotel. An expensive collection of luxury cars in front of the hotel reveals the social-economical status of the guests.
Our ger in August 2012 was basic with electricity and an old stove. The bedding was stained, but on request changed immediately. The shower was warm in the evening. The stove was lit in the evening and morning, but didn't keep the ger warm very long.
The restaurant served decent dinner for us in a special dinning room, where once important party officials would eat. Breakfast was good. Foreigners pay higher price.
