Amuca Lodge, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Nov 05, 2012
Amuca Lodge is one of two lodges in the Ziwa Rhino sanctuary. It is in a quiet part of the park, and only has a very limited number of bedrooms – two little chalets with a double room and another shared bedroom when we were there, although apparently they were expanding that. We were the only ones there when we stayed. It is a lovely, quiet place in the woods. There is a little swimming pool, and a bar/restaurant. The chalets are a little way removed, but the path is lit even after they turn off the generator at night. Once the generator is off, the only noise is the cicadas in the wood.
The food here was absolutely incredible. Alex, the chef, was just amazing. It compares perfectly favourably with some of the best restaurants I’ve been to. This was a very nice bonus, as amazing as the rooms often are, I don’t tend to expect dining experiences in national parks.
The rooms were very nice. The walls were made of mosquito screens rather than solid, so it was lovely and airy and very light in the daytime. The bathrooms was huge and very nice, with a great big shower. I am not sure if they would put people in the dorm-style room if there were people in the double, or if it is intended as a family facility, but if there were people in that the bathroom would be shared. I don’t think that would be a big problem, though, as it’s big enough where there would still be plenty of space and privacy.
