Amtrack West (Pittsburgh) to Central PA (Tyrone)
Amtrack West (Pittsburgh) to Central PA (Tyrone) Reviews
travels by train from Pittsburgh to Tyrone Feb 08, 2011
The amtrak trip from Pittsburgh to Central PA is beautiful (tyrone is about 30 minutes south of Penn State University).
If you start out in Pittsburgh you will start at the historic Penn Station which was built in 1903. The stations purpose was to be one of the few stations where multiple railroad companies could merge at one station.
The train goes from Pittsburgh to Latrobe (Home to Rolling Rock Beer and Pittsburgh Steelers Training Camp), Greensburg, Johnstown, Altoona (home to the Famous Horse Shoe Curve, the 1st train track to cross the allegheny mountains) and then Tyrone (which is a half hour drive from Penn State University).
All the other stations are regular train stations except Tyrone which is a bus stop and you pay on the train once you sit down. But be careful if you are entering or leaving via the tyrone station you have to be an acrobat as there is no step ladder to get you up on the train with your luggage and also the train is practically still moving at the Tyrone station as it is just a drop 'n go.
The cost is very in expensive. if you can get a the ticket ahead of time you are looking at $19 USD for one way. And you have to order online the day before otherwise you have to pay for it once at the station. You may end up with a $24 USD one way ticket if you do that.
