Ampersand Cafe & Bookstore Sydney Reviews
Loose yourself in a good book while sipping on a cup of tea Apr 19, 2013
I have been back to Ampersand on Crown Street in Surry Hills many times now. I originally discovered it while seeking a quaint, quirky, relaxing cafe to spend an afternoon alone with my novel where i could enjoy the view, the sunshine and the atmosphere. The cafe is located in the wonderfully urban, residential area of Surry Hills. It is an area full of boutique shops, cafes and restaurants with a characteristic laid-back charm and none of the hustle and bustle of the Sydney city centre.
The cafe is on a corner, right next to the Surry Hills council library. There is outdoor seating and the ground floor of the cafe features striking large windows that allow the patrons to take full advantage of the usual Sydney sunshine while being indoors. There is also more seating on the first floor library section which is a long room with more atmospheric gloominess to add to the library-feel. The dark-wooded bookshelves line the walls with an assortment of literary wonders from fiction to politics and history, all second-hand and reasonably priced (the prices can be found on the title page just within the front cover!). The furniture is eclectic and a very random assortment of comfortable chairs and tables that make you feel right at home. The sounds of traffic, gossip and footsteps can be heard from the windows. The only thing it's missing is a fireplace!
The coffees and teas are an average price for Sydney standards. My English Breakfast tea cost $4. The chicken sandwich i got was plentiful and delicious with a generous serving of chips on the side but at a whopping $16!
The staff are friendly and always willing to bring your order to you so you don't have to stir from your body-devouring armchair!
This place is a true find for people who love reading and think it to be a sinfully expensive hobby in this Australian city. Even if you don't like to read, this cafe would be difficult not to like.
