After our tour from contiki(visiting Egypt for 9 days) we have another arrangement to visit Amman, Jordan, our gateway to Petra. I always thought of the middle east as a warm place to be but as we were landing at the airport, it was announced that it would be 5 degree celsius outside...and there I was saying to myself OH GREAT!!!! I only have a few winter clothes with me might as well buy my warm jacket over here.
As I went to a money changer at the airport, I found out that the US do...

We have had some problems navigating this city, but we’ve had some success as well (we found the Dead Sea, after all). Today we had pretty high hopes as we set off towards the Eastern desert and the town of Azraq. We planned to see the many “desert castles” on the route, and to visit one of the two nature preserves near the town. In the end, NONE of that happened, and we found a less welcoming side of Jordan in the form of rock-wielding boys, as well. Not our best day. As we departed th...

Amman, the capital of Jordan, is a fascinating city of contrasts – a unique blend of old and new, ideally situated on a hilly area between the desert and the fertile Jordan Valley. Due to the city’s modern-day prosperity and temperate climate, almost half of Jordan’s population is concentrated in the Amman area.
The downtown area is much older and more traditional with smaller businesses producing and selling everything from fabulous jewellery to everyday household items. The peo...

We took a break from class on Saturday so Khalood our teacher took us on sort of a field trip to the King Houssein gardens. I felt like I was a kid again on a elementary school field trip. Atop the gardens, perhaps the most fitting memorial to the late King, is the Royal Automobile Museum. I basically learned the history of modern Jordan through automobiles. Displayed are a ton of cars owned by the royal family in addition to sweet cars used by them on rare occations/c...

We were meant to leave the hostel at 730am. Naser (the hostel owner) called the bus company the night before to reserve us two seats so that, when the bus drove by the hostel, we could jump right on. The 730 bus stopped at the hostel- with one seat open. No worries, we just waited to for the next one that came 15minutes later. Thanks to Naser calling and saying something in harsh sounding Arabic this bus actually had two seats saved for us.
Our large backpacks took up...

Because we were flying out early (I mean 0-dark-30 early) the next morning, we drove straight back to Amman. I thought we would have the opportunity to stop at Mount Nebo, another religious site, but that was not to be. It was already getting late and we still had to pack and try to get a quick nap in before the flight home.
Anyhow, I'm glad I had the opportunity to visit because unfortunately Jay doesn't go there any more.
Luckily there are other ...

After traveling all day from Beirut, getting a service taxi in Damascus and dealing with all the border hassles, I was finally packed into a tiny car cruising at 130 kph through the desert darkness nearing Amman. As I was drifting into a hypnotic, fatigue induced daze the car suddenly smashed into something pretty substantial in the road, maybe concrete or a large rock, which at that speed caused quite a violent jolt. We pulled over and the bumper was ...

If you go to the city of Amman you HAVE to take the 3 hour drive to the ancient city of Petra. Leave early (7am) and arrive in Petra by 11am and you will be able to spend at least 4 hours to see the most amazing city in the world!! Make sure you have great walking shoes, lots of sun screen, a hat and a camera! It really does look like it does in the picture and more. If you stay at Four Seasons Hotel in Amman they will arrange a driver/car for you and breakfast hamper to get you there in st...

The next day we headed off on the minibus to Amman. It was only 5 dinar a piece, but totally crowded. The only downside was the horrendous noise coming from the speakers, I found out later it was a cassette tape. Anyways, the ride back was only about 3 hours and pretty painless. For some reason in Jordan it seems that people smoke cigarettes more than they inhale regular air. Luckily this tradition keeps up while riding in the minibus with the windows up.
O...
