Amiens France Feb 19, 2017
Amiens is north of Paris in the district of Picardie. It is just over one hour by train from Paris Gare du Nord. I caught the 10-31 from Paris, has it was the start of my trip through northern France.I was to stay in Amiens, Rouen,Deauville , and Caen.travelling by bus and train. The Amiens rail station is medium size and has an unusual track layout, the walkway to the platform goes round in a curve. The bus station is outside.--I stayed at the Hotel Holiday Inn Express 10 Boulevard D Alsace Lorraine . not cheap but clean and comfortable.---To see,the Belfrey built in stone in 1742. The Bell tower is one of the oldest in France. ---The oldest part of Amiens is alongside the canal, pretty houses and cafes.---Jules Vernes house from when he moved to Amiens in 1871, he died in 1905. House in Rue Charles Dubios. The house has a distintive small tower.--- The Cathedral dates from the 13 th century, is over 145m long and 70m wide. The exterior is covered in carvings and gargoyles [water spouts ] . The nave is the loftiest in France. --The slender tower is 105m high and opposite the rail station is called the Perret tower.-- In Cathedral square is a lovely cafe, homemade cookies and chocolates at Les Speccialities Regionales It is in Place Notre Dame, same name as the cathedral.
