American WWII Cemetary Oct 06, 2010
World War II, unlike any other war in history, involved everyone across the globe on every continent and millions of people paid the ultimate price for it. Early in the war the allies invaded German strongholds in North Africa, landing troops from Morocco to Egypt. The resulting battle, known as the Campaign for North Africa, ended in Tunis with an allied victory causing the Germans to flee to Italy. In those days, technology was not sufficient to send the fallen home, so the dead were buried where they fell. Tunisia is therefore home to several allied nations cemeteries (see my review on a British cemetery in Beja, Tunisia). This time I had the opportunity to visit the American cemetery in Tunis. It was truly awe-inspiring. Beautifully manicured, the cemetery is also home to the official memorial, which contains a large situation map completely crafted out of different colored tiles. For any history bluff, this is a must see. Only minutes away from the ruins at Carthage, it opens ones eyes to the full spectrum of Tunisian history, which dates back thousands of years.
