American Rover Sailing Cruises Norfolk Reviews
American Rover Harbor Cruise Sep 20, 2011
I thought it would be interesting to actually ride in a schooner (tall masted ship) like the type that were used to go between Europe and America in the colonial days, to get a sense of what that would have been like. So when I saw that you could get a harbor tour of Chesepeake Bay around Norfolk, this was something that I wanted to do.
It started out cool. The masts were raised as the ship pulled away from the dock, and different sites were pointed out as the ship went past them in the bay. Most of these sites were various ship docks--some of which had US Navy ships docked in them--and port facilities for loading containers or coal onto ships.
The day we did this was overcast and threatening rain, and there was no wind at all, so once we got to more of the open bay, where I assume they would have cut the power to the engine and just done some actual sailing, they couldn't do this, so that was a bit disappointing.
And then the return voyage was just the ship sailing back with music playing over the loudspeakers.
It's great if you just want a nice boat ride, but don't expect this to be any different from any other boat tour that you may go on.
