Cheap Place in Downtown May 09, 2011
Stayed here for four nights in the spring. The staff was very helpful (almost too helpful--I asked about their shuttle to the pyramids, and the reception guy spent 10 minutes drawing up a detailed itinerary for me for the duration of my stay), and the rooms big for a hostel with cozy beds and airconditioning, and cheap--$80 (440EP) for a private double room for four nights, and conveniently on Talaat Harb St. Only problem with the room was the mosquitoes--I'm sure plenty of places in Egypt have flying-insect problems, but as the building was a bit old and not closed off (to anything from bugs to dozens of stray cats wandering the floors) it was particularly bad, and I was bitten dozens of times on my face alone the first night--bring bug repellent!
Aside from the friendly staff, there's a little common area set up with cafe tables and a couch for watching TV; although the WiFi worked fine in my room, it may not have reached all the rooms, because other guests were frequently in the common area on their laptops. They also have a kitchen with fridge/freezer and a washroom with washer/dryer (didn't actually use those though, can't say if they aren't for staff only, pay-per-use, broken, etc.)
The biggest problem with the place would be that it is next to impossible to find -- it's on the fourth floor of a building, the name of which is in Arabic, the entry-way to which has a display of men's clothing (did not appear to be a men's clothing store in the building itself; there was a bridal shop, though, very bizarre considering the run-down, burnt-out appearence of the floors, with inaccessible, derelict spiral staircases filled with rubbish and cats showing through holes in the walls...kind of neat actually, but not where you'd expect to find a wedding dress). There's really nothing outside to indicate that American House is there, if it weren't for using their airport pick-up service (free if you stay a certain number of nights, depending on room size) I would never have found it. So definately go for the pick-up service if you can; frankly, even if it means booking an extra night at the place, the extra night is cheaper than a taxi and far less confusing.
Overall I would recommend it, as long as you bear in mind the airport pick-up and bug spray (probably a good idea going to Egypt anyway).
