America del Sur Hostel El Calafate Reviews
Vibrant Staff!!! Jan 21, 2010
When you walk in the door of America del Sur you get such an energetic welcome from the staff that they treat you as if you are a long lost friend! The staff are very friendly here and go out of their way to make sure that they have introduced themselves to you. A very warm welcome indeed! They have a trendy uniform splashing America del Sur name on their t-shirts which they wear proudly.
When you walk in the door don´t be surprised to hear funky music blaring, so if you like your silence its probably not the best place to stay as all sorts of music is played from dawn to late at night!
America del Sur is about a 15min walk from the main hub of town. The hostal has been open for a couple of years so far. The area where the hostel is located seems to be in a newly developed area, which means that there are no footpaths and gravel roads near the hostel till you reach the main road and also other constructions being built nearby.
The rooms are clean and have the basic items you need. We stayed in a dormitory room with 4 beds (2 bunks) which had lockers, window, shower and toilet along with heated tile floors which would be great in winter but we stayed in summer which kinda made the room a little too hot at night. The only solution we came up with was to leave the bathroom window open at night to let the air in the room as the main bedroom window was too low to leave open over night for security reasons.
The staff are very helpful with the infomation of what to do around El Calafate which the main highlight is the Perito Moreno Glacier tours. Most of the staff spoke both english and spanish with an exception of one who also spoke german and french.
The hostal has a cool chill out area above and besides the reception area. The hostal also puts on a bbq each night with all you can eat meat (usually beef or chicken) and a mixture of salads and bbq veges for roughly $50 Argentinian pesos, I can´t comment what it was like as I didn´t try it due to my short visit there.
The only two bad things was that the kitchen was a little small and didn´t smell the cleanest either. Flies were constant company when you entered the kitchen and the fridge was way to small for the size of the hostel that people just shoved their food anywhere which is not usually a problem until you open the fridge door and a bottle of red wine drops on the floor and breaks!
The last bad thing was that the breakfast was not that great! The coffee was tastless, the juice they offered was watered down cordial, and you got to have cornflakes with warm milk! The only edible item was cut up bagette bread that they toasted and gave you dulce de leche (caramel-like spread). So make sure you take an alternative to eat!! But don´t forget that your fly buddies want a peice of your breaky too!
Another bonus is that they pay for your taxi if you have arrived by bus to the hostal which always helps you to save your pennies!
Overall the hostal is pretty good minus the two bad points if you can ignore them you´ll have a good stay there!
