America Inter Otavalo Reviews
Hostal America Inter Jul 24, 2016
Otavalo happened to be much more of the city than I expected. This city is prized for its market, especially during the weekend, but it is also in a beautiful part of the Ecuador, surrounded with picturesque villages and populated by fantastic people. Hostel is on the main square where artisanal market happens every day. Actually my room had fantastic view towards the market and every day stalls are built in the early morning and broken apart at the dusk. That comes at the expense of the noise, especially in the morning, but that is perfectly fine with me.
Hostal America Inter has five floors and the owners live on the second floor area(where dining room is located). In the dining area you can sit and chill at the tables, but it is not the place to really relax. There is kitchen that you can use and cook whatever you like and it has all pots/pans and refrigerator. This is more of the hotel then hostel, and only top floor has some dormitories. Private rooms were so cheap that it did not make sense for me to share room with other people. Room features couple of beds (I tried them both and found less uncomfortable one) but they are not on the comfortable side because bed is an old school (maybe just very old) spring system that is pretty weird. They have plastic over it which is good so that bed bugs don’t have anything to look for around here… Blanket is nice and warm as every blanket should be in the mountains of Ecuador. Bathroom has very low pressure, but there is hot water and it is clean. Towels are provided and if you need anything you can ask reception and they are happy to help. There is no breakfast included but that is not an issue at all. Walls are a bit on the thin side but there were no screamers around me… You are surrounded with small markets and street food vendors (which is actually good food) where you can find fantastic, healthy or a bit more fried food for incredibly small prices. Top of the hostel has few chairs and the balcony that overlooks most of the city. It is the great place for sunsets or to smoke your cigarettes (if you are into that)
Hostal America Inter in excellent location, only three blocks from the bus station, few blocks from the train and right on the market. Best food during the day can be found if you are passing the market into one of the nicely made streets that goes towards the fresh food markets. Also, the food market is incredibly cheap and excellent clean food. For example, great empanadas are less than $1, food plate is around $3, soups around $2… fantastic quality.
This is not the place that was meant to be a hostel, but it looks like that owners (Colombian couple) decided to try their luck with backpacker travelers and it works for them. They are listed in few guide books and their service is basic and good. Warmly recommended.
