Low key, beautiful beaches and coastline in East Bali... Aug 23, 2011
Most people who come to Bali opt for the popular beaches of the South (Kuta/Legian/Seminyak). These areas, while having some natural beauty, tend to be congested and often will have a traffic jam to bypass in order to get to.

If you really want a relaxing and low key beach experience, try out Amed in East Bali. It's about 3 hours from Denpasar area or Ubud, but well worth the trip. Lots of lovely accommodation, all spread along a very long coastline which features steep green hills that descend right onto the beach and ocean. To the north the majestic volcano Gunung Agung is visible.

In general you can snorkel anywhere along the coast, right off the beach. There's also a few shipwrecks here which attract the underwater rainbow. Very cool. Eating is not fantastic, but there are a few sublime options. A place to spend time, bring a book, swim in the ocean, and just feel the Bali Bliss.
