Ambarawa Vacation Guide
The town Ambarawa was an important administrative centre for Central Java during the Dutch occupation. It was known as Willem 1 and had a large military camp of the KNIL (Royal Dutch East Indies Army).
This military camp was connected with Yogyakarta and Semarang through railway. There’s also a cog railway to supply the mountainous area around Ambarawa. Nowadays the railway is only in use for tourists, mainly local tourists.
During the second world war there were several Japanese prison camps situated here.
