The amana colonies are located just outside Iowa City. Originally settled in 1855 as a german pietist community the amana colonies are a collection of settlements where early founders could practise communal and spiritual living isolated from other influence. After 1930 the community faced economic hardship and stresses related to the strict codes of communal living and ultimately the community decided to retain their faith and spiritual organization but forgo communal living ideals at the same time maintain a company built on the trade and business the community had established as part of their communal livelyhood.

Today the communities have become a quaint tourist destination, highlighting the unique history of the colonies while providing traditional craftworks and culinary oportunities.
