Great unexpected gem! May 06, 2011
The Amalfi Cathedral is a rather stunning church in the centre of Amalfi. Around since the ninth century, the church has been embellished and tweaked so many times that it contains numerous architectural styles such as Romanesque, Byzantine and even traces of Baroque. Apart from this, the steps are rather remarkable. It was effectively a mini trek to get up here! Perhaps the most remarkable bit about the church is that it contains the remains of Saint Andrew, which were brought here from Constantinople in the thirteenth century. I really thought the tomb was rather nice to look at, as well as the fa├žade, which is covered with black and white stripes and topped with a wonderful mosaic depiction. This was a very nice church to visit, and not at all what I expected in glitzy Amalfi. Go see it when you tire of the sunbathing!
