My 2nd time through Brazil, I felt there was one last obstacle in South America for me to "conquer" -the Amazon. But it all started out in Rio with the Mecca of Brazialian Jiu-Jitsu, the legendary Gracie Barra Academy. Good times, interesting country.

This is paradise!!! Arrived at the sweltering ´beach´town of Alter do Chao, a tiny little place that has nothing more than a holiday feel to it. We found a great place to stay that even had hooks on the porch of our room for our hammocks! We wondered down the dirt track to the water front and the water stretches out with little sandy beach islands off the shore. We got a boat out to the island, and here we found soft white sand beaches like the Caribbean and swam in the warm water. It was ...

One of the main attractions in the North of Brazil is the Amazon river and its basin. It takes five days to go by ship from Belém to Manaus, passing by two important cities of the region: Santarém and Parintins. Stopping to visit one of them can be a good idea. I did it in Santarém, and travelled to Alter do Chão, fifty minutes away by bus. If you choose to travel sleeping in a hammock - the cheapest option - you should learn some tips.
