Alter Turm Aug 07, 2014
The “Alter Turm” (“Old Tower”) is all what remains of the former abbey church. Built between 987 and 994, it is the oldest remainign building in the state of Saarland. The octagonal shape is said to be inspired from Aachen Cathedral. After centuries of decay, it was restored in the 19th century but is not a working church any more. It was once the burial place of St. Lutwinus who is now buried in the church named after him.

The tower is located in the Abbey Park which is described in a separate review.
