Al was a very condescending host. I am a senior citizen and do not need to be told to put out the light in the bathroom when I am not using it. When scolded for this I felt too intimidated to tell him that I was just going back in there and was only trying to find my shampoo. I was afraid that he might get snappy as I had already had a shower in the morning. God forbid that I have another one.
Only one shower between 12 or 14 people and to top it off the washing machine was located in the shower/bathroom and he would make you wait until he got all the bedding out of the washing machine to put on the line. I think it was him who should be waiting for us to have a shower first after all we were the paying guests.
He was totally disagreeable about us leaving our backpacks anywhere in his hostel for the day that we were leaving and our train did not go until early evening so we had to trek all day with backpacks on.
The day we left I was up early in the morning and was in the tiny kitchen doing the crossword puzzle. When I started doing the crossword it was 6.00 am and practically no natural daylight. I had a cup of tea and moved towards the tiny window. I had both the tiny light in the kitchen area and the window area on. I moved closer to the window and turned the light off at the window as light was starting to come in. Al appeared at the door and right away said "you don't need this light on", and turned it off. Again, I am a very frugal senior citizen back packing in Eastern Europe and do not need to be scolded like a small child for having the light on.Bear in mind that I am not twenty years of age and my eyesight is not what it used to be. It should be my perogative if I want the light on or not.

If you don't go out and party with Al then you are a persona non grata to Al. The place was clean but the facilities were pretty terrible for all those people to share and the owner to use to do the washing machine.
I felt totally intimidated and he could have ruined my stay in Split if I had let him.

Al's Place is a cozy little hostel set in the heart of old town Split. The owner of the hostel, Al, is really friendly and loves to show his guests around the city. He took us out to different bars and restaurants, and his recommendations were quite good (if a little vague). The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. Only drawback is that the hostel is quite small, and there aren't too many hostels in Split, so make sure to book your room early. If the hostel is completely booked, Al will try to find you a place in an apartment nearby.

Note: The hostel is hard to find, and nobody in Split really follows the street names in old town, so make sure to follow his directions on how to get to the hostel carefully!

Checked into Al's Place, the hostel in Split, and met Nick from Melbourne, Lucy from Oxford, and Kate and Moriah from Oregon. They were really friendly and invited me out to dinner with them. We grabbed some pizzas and then headed over to a bar overlooking… Split
