Alphen aan den Rijn is a place and municipality in South Holland, located to the Oude Rijn between the places Leiden, Gouda, Bodegraven and Ter Aar. Outside the city Alphen aan den Rijn itself count the municipality also the villages Aarlanderveen and Zwammerdam. An inhabitant of Alphen aan den Rijn is called an Alphenaar.

The surface of the municipality Alphen aan den Rijn is 57,68 km², of which 2,52 km² water. By 1 January 2005 the municipality had a house stock of 28,487 houses and by 30 November 2009 an inhabitant number of 72,534. In October 2001 was Alphen aan den Rijn selected as greenest city of the Netherlands.In September 2002 was Alphen aan den Rijn even exclaimed as the greenest city of Europe. To the Rijnhaven lies a vast industry area. Here stands also the 135 meters high KPN tower which can be seen on all sides of Alphen aan den Rijn. This was the first tower that was used by Nozema for the passing of digital ether television.

The name Alphen is probable originating from the name of the Roman castellum Albanianae, which "settlement to the white water" means.
