Pronounced 'Annick', Alnwick is famous for its fine castle which was started in 1096 and restored by the Percy family in the early part of the 14th century -- indeed it is still owned by the Percy family, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland since 1309. For full details of the castle and admission information, please see the website below.

Close to the castle, spanning the River Aln, is the Lion Bridge (please see photo) on which is the Percy Lion, the emblem of the Percy family -- very nice views of the castle and surrounding grounds from here.

Apart from the castle, Alnwick is a very nice place to visit, with lots of shops selling local produce, antiques and crafts and there are extensive gardens adjacent to the castle.
