Great beach resort in St Lucia Dec 17, 2012
hey, this is my first review. I just got back from a trip to St Lucia and want to give kudos to the resort I stayed at while I still feel that sunny Caribbean vibe.

Never been to the Caribbean before and rarely do beach holidays, so maybe I was naturally more impressed than the average lobster.

Anyway, the first great thing that struck me about Smugglers Cove was that when they say all-inclusive they mean it. This included tasty and diverse food, drinks (inc alcholic cocktails), water activities (kayaking, windsailing, water skiing, snorkelling), gym, and loads more. Whatever you pay upfront for your holiday is going to be the only real expense. Any kids are well catered for too. I was there for 7 days/nights and only needed to head out the resort a couple of times - once to do a tour, and once because I was desperately craving some street food (jerk chicken) at nearby Rodney Bay.

The spacious hotel rooms are set within pastel coloured dormitories designed to feel like a village community. Lots of trees, lawns and little waterways in-between. It's a large resort, with a really nice relaxed atmosphere. There are cats, frogs, small lizards, even the odd multi-coloured caterpillar. Watching the little birds that fly around the open dining areas made breakfast feel almost psychedelic.

They have a small shop at the hotel, selling basics, and the nearest shopping mall's only a 5-10 minute taxi ride away.

The hotel staff are friendly, and friendlier still when they know that you respect them and the work they're doing for you. The guys looking after the water sports gear provide free lessons, and they demand you pay attention and follow instructions. Firm but fair.

The night-time entertainment was good, they have a very talented male/female dance troupe there doing different types of show most evenings. Their broadway show is jaw-droppingly good. I was also collared into a Limbo dance competition on stage. Ok, yeah I did win it :)

If you like UB40, then you'll appreciate their classics playing on loop near the pool area each day. I do, so it was all good.

So, what were the not-so-good points?

Well, the transfer to/from the airport was a couple of hours each way, and some of that is stuck in traffic through Castries.

Beware the beach mafia hanging out at Smugglers Cove beach. This is a public area - once you step beyond the pool area, you're open game for folks trying to sell tours, trinkets, aloe vera, and of course cheeba. Put your streetwise hat on, be firm but polite, have a sense of humour, and you won't get pestered too much. There's always hotel security looking over the beach anyway. For me, it's all part of the fun and I did buy a jet-ski ride (always money well spent).

The only other thing which I think may annoy a few people are some of the other tourists... without mentioning nationalities. A few seemed to like getting high and mighty over the staff. But there was a nice mix of nationalities there, from all over the world, and there's so much to do you can easily just get on with your own thing.

The resort is good for families, groups of friends, and couples looking to get married. I'd recommend it to anyone thinking of visiting the Caribbean. Proof of the pudding is that I wish I could have stayed longer, and would like to go back sometime!

I thoroughly enjoyed my vacation here :) It was an all inclusive dream-land and I can't wait to return. The people and service were my favorite part, shortly followed by all the varieties of excursions and entertainment. The views were great and the overall impression was of magical beauty.

St Lucia was a truly amazing holiday. The resort was fantasic with plenty of amentities. The only problem I would say it that the airport is located in the south and the resort in castries in the north which was about a 2 hour trip. I would highly recommened where possible using the helicopter transfer.
