Almere resides on the southern part of the biggest man-made island ever made. Almere is connected to the motorways the A6 and the A27. You can reach it by train in 30 minutes from Central Station Amsterdam (cost about 9 euro retour). Almere is perfect for biking. It has separate infrastructure for bikers with separate bikepaths. Even the buses in Almere drive on bus lanes, separated from cars.

Almere is the 7th biggest city in the Netherlands with more than 192.000 citizens and it is expanding quickly, with a goal to be the 5th biggest city in the Netherlands in 2015.

In 2008 Almere was voted "the ugliest city of the Netherlands", adding to its already rather unpopular image in the Netherlands of being boring, empty and lifeless. Almere objects readily against this, and tries hard to gain a more positive image.

Almere Haven has a small harbour with ferry connections to the Dutch mainland, and is surrounded by large forests of poplars containing buzzards and small deer. The harbour surrounded with restaurants and terrasses. Every Friday from 08.00 am to 15.00 there´s a market.

The new city centre in Almere-Stad (March 2006) hosts an attractive waterfront, a cinema (the biggest in Europe), a theatre, restaurants and appartments. On the Grote Markt you´ll find a big podium for events and an assortment of restaurants, cafés and discotheques. Every Wednesday and Saturday from 08.00 am to 16.00 there´s a market with a great assortment of food and non-food.

Their garbage system was even cool. If you put trash into any of the cities garbage cans on the street it gets vacuumed into an underground sys...

After lunch we arrived back home. We really enjoyed this diverse tour through France and saw many places we want to visit again when it is not winter. In total we drove 3610 kilometers (2243 miles), drank a lot of bio wine, took more than 1500 photos and only had rain on the last day (back in the Benelux).

Going North
posted by:
Jun 16, 2007 - Jun 24, 2007
On relatively short notice we diceded at work, that it would be a good moment for me now to take a 2 week vacation. We were considering Brittany, which we love and where we've been often and Denmark, a country we have not been before (I spend a few days in Copenhagen earlier this year). As the weather predictions for Denmark were looking good and we were up to something new, we decided to go North. We took it easy, got everything packed and organized and left Almere rather late, at 3pm.
