Almere resides on the southern part of the biggest man-made island ever made. Almere is connected to the motorways the A6 and the A27. You can reach it by train in 30 minutes from Central Station Amsterdam (costs about 10,50 euro return ticket). Almere is perfect for biking. It has separate infrastructure for bikers with separate bikepaths. Even the buses in Almere drive on bus lanes, separated from cars.
Almere is the 7th biggest city in the Netherlands with more than 188.209 citizens (1st January 2010) and it is expanding quickly, with a goal to be the 5th biggest city in the Netherlands in 2015.
In 2008 Almere was voted "the ugliest city of the Netherlands", adding to its already rather unpopular image in the Netherlands of being boring, empty and lifeless. Almere objects readily against this, and tries hard to gain a more positive image.
Almere Haven has a small harbour with ferry connections to the Dutch mainland, and is surrounded by large forests of poplars containing buzzards and small deer. The harbour surrounded with restaurants and terrasses. Every Friday from 08.00 am to 15.00 there´s a market.
The new city centre in Almere-Stad (March 2006) hosts an attractive waterfront, a cinema (the biggest in Europe), a theatre, restaurants and appartments. On the Grote Markt you´ll find a big podium for events and an assortment of restaurants, cafés and discotheques. Every Wednesday and Saturday from 08.00 am to 16.00 there´s a market with a great assortment of food and non-food.
