Secret beach Sep 10, 2011
Allerton beach is one of Kauai's best kept secrets! It is super quiet, sheltered, and stunning. I went to it twice during my visit and only saw 3 other people total during my 2 visits.

Here's the thing. All beaches on Kauai are public property. That means there is no way to block off a beach and make it private to keep people out. So technically, the signs around the property blocking off the access to the beach are illegal. And technically, the locals who ignore these signs and trespass onto private property are also doing something illegal. So the two parties exist in this symbiotic relationship where the people of Kauai don't make a fuss about the blocked beach access and the owners of the beach don't make a fuss about the few people traipse on through private property to the public beach. With all of that said, it keeps Allerton beach really secluded.

The walk to get to the beach is a little bit rough (narrow ledges and decent sized drops) because it isn't maintained by anyone but it can certainly be done in flip flops.

The pictures really speak for themselves. This is the place to get away from the tourist heavy beaches on the island because more than likely there will be no one else there. The surf is usually good and you just can't beat having your own secret beach!

Some landowners do not create public access, maybe there was no well-worn path so they might block it or build over it. Access is permitted up to the high-tide mark on the land. Lawa`i-kai, or Allerton's, is owned by the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Here, shoreline access is by trespassing, kayaking, or hiking around Spouting Horn. I would say the "trail" is not marked, and can be real dangerous.
