Allandale Winery Feb 25, 2017
During our visit to Sydney in November 2015, we booked ourselves onto a wine and food tasting tour of the nearby Hunter Valley.

We chose a day trip which was organised by Zepher Tours and included 3 wineries, a brewery, a distillery, a cheese shop, a chocolate shop and a lunch of wood-fired pizzas.

The sixth and final stop on the tour was Allandale Winery. We arrived there around 3:10pm, after several hours of indulgence, and stayed there until 3:50pm.

We were promised a winery in picturesque surroundings...and Allandale Winery didn't disappoint. It was surrounded by lush green vineyards and hills.

We sat in a huge warehouse, surrounded by wooden wine barrels, and a young lady gave us a short talk on the history of the winery, the varieties of grapes grown there and the different wines that they produced.

Then we got to taste 9 different wines...in quick succession. To be honest, by this stage of the proceedings I was struggling to distinguish one wine from another. I could still differentiate between white and red, but that was about my limit! Ok, that's not strictly true - I was helped by the fact that Allandale Winery doesn't just produce wines from the common Verdelho, Semillon, Shiraz and Merlot grapes, but also produces some less common wines for the region such as a sparkling Gew├╝rztraminer and a Tempranillo.

The wines that we tasted, in order, were:

2014 Semillon

2015 Pinot Gris

2015 Sauvignon Blanc

2015 Chardonnay

2015 Sparkling Gew├╝rztraminer

NV Lombardo Chilled Red (a non-vintage light, almost rose, easy-drinking red)

2014 Tempranillo

2013 Mudgee Cabernet Sauvignon

2014 Matthew Shiraz

We were then invited to make our way to reception where we could sample some sweet wines and make our purchases at "cellar door prices". We sampled a 2013 Botrytis Viognier and a fortified tawny wine (similar to port, but not allowed to be classified as such as it isn't produced in Portugal's Douro Valley).
