Affordable City hotel Dec 28, 2012
The Ibis Styles Kingsgate is a mid-class hotel located on King Street in an old building, that’s pleasantly renovated. It’s only two blocks away from the Southern Cross railway and Sky-bus terminal, and about a 15 minutes’ walk towards Pitt Street and the center.
For budget reasons, we opted for a non- renovated room. Our room, on the 4th floor, was long but narrow and featured two single beds and a desk.
There was also a flat-screen TV, a fridge and a kettle with instant coffee and tea. The room had wall to wall carpet and furniture that had seen better days, yet it was acceptably clean.
Our room had a connecting door that was locked, though at night we could hear our neighbors’ TV. I guess the sound transmitted mostly because of the door.
The small bathroom had a simple set-up with a bath, toilet and shower. The toilet seat looked really dirty and yellowish, but the stains were in the material – so it was not really dirty but only looked that way.
The room doesn’t feature any Wi-Fi. There’s 5 MB of free Wi-Fi per 24hour allocated at the lobby area. Access in the room needs to be paid and is very costly.
Breakfast is served on the 2nd floor and was not included in our room rate. The continental breakfast costs 12 AUD, the hot breakfast sets you back 17 AUD. The continental breakfast included juice, coffee and tea, cereal, plenty of fresh and canned fruit, yoghurt, bread and all sort of sweet spreads. The hot breakfast then includes the same buffet but with a plate of eggs, sausage, hash browns etc… served to the table.
The location of this hotel was perfect to our needs and our stay did not break the bank. The optional continental breakfast surely offered good value for money. I’d reckon the renovated rooms would look much fresher and up to date, but for our two nights’ stay, our budget room was more than functional.

noisy and insecure! Apr 03, 2011
Due to the Tennis open while we were in Melbourne, almost all hotel accommodation were full or left those outrages rate rooms.
At first we thought we were lucky to find this hotel at the good location with a lower price then Ibis and Mantra….only after I have spent a whole week in that hotel I know we weren’t that lucky.
The location was excellent – one block away from the busiest bus/train station – the Southern Cross station. It was about 5 minute’s walks after the airport shuttle dropped us off at the Southern Cross station.
The reception staff was friendly enough to let us inspect the room before we checked. We wanted to do that after a bad experience in another hotel.
I am not sure how much a standard room would cost if it wasn’t for the super peak period but we did pay a five star hotel room rate! It was crazy because this is the cheapest we could find in Melbourne during that period.
We had the disable friendly room where the bathroom was huge! It was clean and we have enough amenities.
The bed was comfortable and cleans though the room was a little tiny for us, if it wasn’t for the huge bathroom; I think we would have a bigger bed rom.
Overall the room was clean. There is a flat screen TV, coffee and tea making facility – is a basic room.
My one complaint about this hotel was the safety. There were nights that very noisy because there was a night club near the hotel. I could hear people laughing, talking and just making lot of noise in the middle of night. There was also one night; I think passed midnight, there were a few drunken boys knocking at my door and other people’s door. That freaked me out! The most horrible experience was – someone just came into my room with the key!!!!!! How could this happen? The hotel staff gave him the wrong key with wrong room number??
I will definitely not going back to this hotel again or recommending friends to stay there!
