Alka Hotel Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh Reviews
A paradise right in the middle of a chaos May 28, 2011
I think this hotel is just super. It provides all basic, centrally located and has a beautiful view. And it's cheap!
When my husband was searching a hotel in the centre of Varanasi, the online description of this hotel seemed to good to be true. But yes, it is still India. You never know what you get. The country is full of surprises. We tried it out anyways. If the Indian prejudices about filth and rats are present, we will find another hotel there.
But we were too skeptical.
As agreed we were picked up from the airport to the city. Once arrived in the busy city, our driver could not go any further, because the road to the hotel is only accessible by foot. Where we stopped two baggage porters where waiting for us. They quickly packed our bags from the car and disappeared into the crowd. We also ran into the crowd to pursue our suitcases. It soon become clear to us why we could not just take the car to the hotel entrance. We walked into a small lane and continued our journey through the labyrinth of narrow streets in the old center. And there, in one of those stinking streets is our hotel. Other than outside it is immediately much cooler, cleaner and more pleasant. Very quick we checked in and curiously walk to our room.
It's perfect! We had everything here: clean bed, towels, clean bathroom, TV, balcony with chairs overlooking the Ganges.
But it must be said that not all rooms are like that. Our room was already cheap, but some travelers prefer even cheaper. But then you share a toilet and shower in the corridor with others and I believe those rooms are without windows.
And yet it is an ideal low budget option. You use your room basically just for sleeping and storing of your belongings.
The hotel has a spacious terrace with a view to sit where everyone can read, relax, eat or get to know each other.
It's very centrally located. Exactly between the old town and the ghats. The most popular ghats are very close and can be seen from the hotel.
Varanasi might be a bit too intense for some people. When it exhaust you, you can easily flee from the craziness but still witness the street life on the hotel terrace which is just fascinating.
Besides enjoying the view there is also an opportunity to order drinks and food. The menu is extensive and vegetarian. The restaurant at the hotel was one of my favorite parts. The food was very tasty! Only sometimes when the wind blew a little too hard, the ash from the burning ghat flew on the dining area.
A very common Indian thing also happened in Varanasi. The power went off, quite regularly. During the day you'll melt without an air conditioning and in the evening all lights go out. But not in Alka because of the own electric power supply motor. Very efficient!
The staff was very polite, friendly and helpful.
And there is also an Internet cafe.
Anyway. This hotel has everything you need. And all of it is in the very heart of Varanasi.
