Alhondiga de Granaditas Guanajuato Reviews
#1 Historical site in Guanajuato May 03, 2011
For all you history lovers this is the one place you CAN'T miss in Guanajuato. It's called the "Alhondiga de Granaditas" and it's an old barn built in the 1700s. It was just used for food storage purposes for about 8 months, because after the struggle for independence started, it became the site of one of the main fights between the insurgent mob of Miguel Hidalgo and the royal armies. Many soldiers and families were killed after the Alhondiga was taken.
Today it is the site of the Museo Regional de Guanajuato, which hosts an interesting collection of items from different periods of Mexican history, from prehispanic times up to the Mexican revolution.
Nice murals decorate some of its walls, and they also have a temporal exhibition of paintings and other works of art.
