Gardens, Granada Nov 10, 2010
The Generalife section of the Alhambra refers to the gardens which border the site. Constructed in the early part of the fourteenth century, the garden layout still retains its original landscaping.

The section of the garden is best visited around late afternoon or sunset, so that you escape the intense heat and the light makes the garden look even more attractive!

The beds of flowers are beautiful. Roses in a variety of colours, fields of marigolds, climbers and beautiful beds that are planted in an amazing mixture of colours, the gardens are well worth a visit.

The landscape nearby is beautiful too, it reminded me a lot of the Tuscan landscapes in Italy for some strange reason. Either way, it's all very beautiful to look at.

The fountains add a nice cooling effect and offer the visitor with a soothing sound that just adds something special to the backdrop.

The Islamic influence is evident everywhere too, from the ordered and clean lines to the tiles and patterns around the gardens.

A very inspiring and relaxing end to the Alhambra site itself, but by no means is it the very least! Go see it.

Reading this, I wish I had thought about the time of day more. I can imagine it in the diminishing light!

Most people visiting the Alhambra buy a ticket that covers the Alcazaba, the Nazrid Palace and the Generalife. Only the Palace has a fixed time and that is for entry only - you can stay as long as you like. The 3 can be visited in any order so make the first and last fit around the middle one (geographically as well as list order.)

I am dividing the reviews into three parts to avoid any one becoming too long.

I have already said in Alhambra 2 that it is the Nazrid Palace that is far and away the outstanding part of the Alhambra. This alone would make the Alhambra one of Europe's great sights. The Generalife is not of the same order although less than a 5 rating may be a bit mean.

It is a summer palace where the Muslim rulers could retire for peace. it has been changed appreciably since the reconquista and we don't know exactly what it was like. However the gardens surounding it have the typical watr features of the time.

There is a horrible story that a Sultanah met one of the guards surreptitiously in these gardens and that this led to the slaughter of his whole family by the angry and jealous sultan.

Just as this was generally (in spite of that story) a place of serene peace, it is sensible to go there last as it's relaxing after the physical exertions of the Alcazaba and the intellectual intensity of the palace.
