Alexandria Overview

Alexandria is a small city of about 48,000 (up 5% since 2000) located at the intersection of Interstate 49, U.S. Highways 71, 165, and 167 and Louisiana Highway 1 in Rapides Parish in Central Louisiana. Its location on the South bank of the Red River near the geographic center of the state has earned Alexandria the nickname "The Heart of Louisiana". The area was originally settled by a few trappers and merchants in support of the Spanish outpost Post du Rapides and as a transit point to Natchitoches the first settlement in Louisiana. In 1785, Alexander Fulton received a deed from Spain and a town was laid out in 1805 and named "Alexandria" for Fulton. Alexandria is the parish seat of Rapides Parish. Rapides Parish was established in 1807.

Alexandria has several nice historic districts with quite a number of buildings of historical and/or architectural interest. There are 4 districts and 34 individual locations in Alexandria listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Alexandria also boasts several fine museums like the Alexandria Museum of Art.
