Alexander Nevsky Cathedral Jul 11, 2017
Together with the Sveta Nedelya Church – which is of medieval origin but has adapted a similar style in the late 19th century – it is seen as one of the best-known landmarks of Sofia. Its copper-coloured domes are found on many postcards and tourist prospects. The construction of the church began in 1882 and finished thirty years later in 1912. Inside, the walls are covered with frescoes – however, be aware that it is pretty dark inside if you want to take pictures (see below). A relic from Alexander Nevsky is regarded as one of the church's greatest treasures.

Entry is free, but there is a 10,00 Lev photo fee (of course only applied to those who want to take photos). In the crypt, there is a museum of icons which I chose not to visit. My demand to see icons was more than satisfied already on that day.

Nice enough Mar 10, 2013
Constructed in the latter half of the nineteenth century, this cathedral is built in the neo-Byzantine style and is the second largest in the Balkans (after the one in Belgrade). The church was built in honour of the Russian print and saint, Alexander Nevsky. I think one of his relics is preserved within the cathedral. The cathedral’s façade is rather iconic with its shades of gold and light turquoise. Inside, I didn’t think that the decoration or overall impression of the cathedral was that awe-inspiring. It was respectable enough but I expected something a bit grander for the capital city. The cathedral also has a pretty decent gift shop. If you are visiting Sofia, this site is a must-see for many itineraries and I would recommend a very quick visit here.

It was perfect weather that day Brian, and I was lucky! Jim, the cathedral belongs to the Bulgarian orthodox faith, and I agree about the unusual style. Not seen one like this before!
