Basically, long and short, I'm here.. and I'm not too happy about
it. Figured that being in an arab country would change my opinion
about the culture (or whatever their approximation to that is) and
whatnot, but unfortunately, after a few days, I've sort of hardened my
viewpoints on certa…

Hong Kong -› Xiamen, China -› …
Setting off from Hong Kong in Aug 1992, 2 days after turning 22, I traveled China, Mongolia, Russia, Scandinavia, the Baltics, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, returning to Hong Kong in July 1993. Apart from Athens/Cairo, I never set foot on an airplane during this year-long walkabout. Before the days of digital cameras, internet, and mobile phones, this solo adventure was as much a discovery of myself as it was about these 31 countries. Many of them, like me, have long since changed.

Aleppo, Syria -› Ebla, Syria -› …
10 days with 45 archeology enthusiasts and two nice guides (a bedouin and a syrian) riding a bus across the two countries. Fascinating places, ruins, people and nature. Good food, but a quarter of our group caught the usual gastroenteric problems. Very nice weather except a sandstorm in Palmyra.
We admired the signs of ancient civilizations and Roman Empire, and we were able to experience a Turkish Bath (same as Roman Thermae...) great! highly recommened!

A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both.

Istanbul, Turkey -› Antalya, Turkey -› …
From Antakya I caught a taxi across the border to Aleppo with three Syrians returning from a shopping trip in Istanbul. On reaching the border it transpired that the border guards had gone on lunch 20 mins earlier and therefore closed the border for an hour, therefore we had a somewhat frustrating …

We celebrated Kim's birthday in Aleppo today (a couple of days late) with an Australian couple we had spent some time with. We couldn't have found a better venue at the Khan Zaman in the alleys of the old Christian Quarter. The restaurant had four levels ... two levels in medieval Arab style, …

Crac des
Chevaliers
Yesterday we drove from Palmyra
to Crac des Chevaliers (Qala’at al-Hosn). Crac des Chevaliers was originally
built as an Islamic fort by the Emir of Homs in 1031. However almost all the
castle is Crusader built, as they vastly expanded the basalt fort with
limestone …
