Tiny Alder, Montana May 11, 2017
Alder is a tiny town of about 100 (down 11% since 2000) located along Montana Highway 287 in Madison County in Southwestern Montana. Alder was settled in the 1860s along a river the Shoshoni called "Passamari"; and the miners in the area called "Stinking Water". The river was later erroneously renamed the "Ruby River" for the gems found there (which were actually garnets). Alder was named for Alder Gulch and Alder Creek. In 1863, gold was discovered in Alder Gulch and massive dredge boats went through the entire gulch leaving behind large piles of gravel that little other than scrub brush and stunted trees could grow on. I did not see much here but found the history interesting and it is in a very beautiful area.
