Alberton Overview

Alberton is a tiny town of about 430 (up 13% since 2000) located along Interstate 90 (between exit 75 and exit 77) in Mineral County in Western Montana not far from the border with Idaho. Alberton was settled in the 1890s when a couple of families homesteaded here. The town became a railroad stop in 1908 and a depot was built. The town was renamed Alberton after Albert J. Earling of the Milwaukee Railroad and Alexander Albert an early homesteader. Alberton incorporated in 1920. Alberton has a surprisingly good historic district for such a small town with 10 individual locations on the National Register of Historic Places.
