Pleasantly Pleasing Place Jul 30, 2016
Hotel Edelweiss (or Albergo Edelweiss as the sign says) is located close to Piazza San Domenico in Erice. This is a fairly central location in Erice, close to many restaurants and shops, and just a short walk from the main square in Erice (Piazza Umberto). The hotel is a 3 floor building on a small street (Cortile Padre Vincenzo) just to the right of San Domenico monastery, which serves as a lecture hall for the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture.

This is a family run hotel, owned by a fellow named Mario who also owns the Edelweiss restaurant in the main square. The rooms are fairly spacious, but the bathrooms are typically small, which is common in Italian hotels. The beds are firm, but comfortable enough and the water is good and hot for showering. The staff is generally helpful in supporting their guests, though some speak only a little English, but try their best. There is one lady who speaks English well and she helps out a lot when available. She is not around in the early mornings, in and out during the day, but almost always around in the evenings.

The stay here was 9 days and the first 2 days the room had some intermittent problem with the electricity going out. Another room was offered across the hall. This was actually a better room than the first one, so a bonus for the remainder of the stay. It had a little bit of a better view too, though the second floor is not optimal, and going to the third floor has better unobstructed views. The rooms have accessible balconies to enjoy the view from. On a clear day the views of the surrounding landscape and Monte Cofano on the Mediterranean are simply splendid.

Amenities include free wifi (fairly consistent, though only a little slow at times - adequate enough) and free breakfast (cereals, pastries, croissants, fruit, yogurt, juices and coffee - cappuccino or espresso). Rooms have a television, telephone and small refrigerator. The only drawback worth mentioning is that it's a bit noisy sometimes. The family stays up late some nights talking and laughing, occasionally eating late with lots of silverware/dish clanging. One can always just close the room windows for more quiet, but still a little audible. This is not always convenient if the room gets a bit warm, as the cool night air with open windows is better.

Overall, this hotel gets high marks for location, quality of the room, pleasing views, staff service and amenities. The quaint little street it is located on also has a small open air sitting area with a canopy to relax or enjoy something to eat/drink. It is part of the hotel and possible to get service there as a guest, though you would have to make your preference known inside to the staff. Pleasantly pleasing place all around if the occasional noise level at night doesn't disturb too much. I've stayed in a fair number of hotels in Erice over the years and I'd rank this high on the list of those.

Very good place to stay for a week. Decent room & bathroom, fine breakfast, centrally located and semi-private sitting area outside as the hotel is down a small street just off a nearby piazza.
