Tirana is the capital of Albania, and the biggest city of the country. Still it is a small and compact place that is best explored on foot. Its architecture bears considerable influence of Italian as well as Turkish monuments, lying as it does exactly between Rome and Istanbul. The Skënderberg Square is a huge open space in the centre of the city while Mt. Dajti, at 5,030 ft, towers over the eastern side. Tirana has many museums.
The third-largest city in Albania, Elbasan is th...

“Journeys, like artists, are born and not made. A thousand differing circumstances contribute to them, few of them willed or determined by the will --whatever we may think.”
- Lawrence Durrell 1912-1990, British Author
Durres, Albania. It is a surprise to us who were expecting so much less. The sea always helps the view and atmosphere of almost any place- accept New Mexico or Kansas- those places are unfortunately hopeless : )
What we came to love wa...

To truly see a place you have to see it from the eyes of others. Albania is a place where you cannot see the true beauty in the scenery until you really get to know the people. The people here have got to be among the most hospitable on the planet, that’s for sure. If you are their guest you are like King of the House. This was proven during WWII where Albania was a stainless nation, with not one Jew being handed over to the Nazis! I lived here for 4 months and Kruje is no exception. I now ...

He has a small house in town and a family consisting of a wife and three kids. They, in turn bring their friends over to see the foreign vistor, the first Westerner they have ever seen. We pose for photos and I'm taken around town for a walking tour. That evening we eat a well prepared dinner that includes a greyish whitish dish that looks like cottage cheese and tastes like some kind of meat. Find out it's goat brain. Next day, a family friend offers to tak...

For those of you looking to visit Albania, I Highly recommend it. Please note, this is not a destination for the traveller that is looking to go and be pampered, and expect world-class amenities. These are available and are possible to have, but Albania is not yet catered for this type of traveller. IF you are someone who likes adventure, likes to actually "experience" a destination and not lock yourself up in a resort for the hotel time, Albania is for you!

In the morning we caught the ferry across the Corfu straight to Saranda in Albania. We had been expecting a small fishing village, but Saranda was actually much larger. It is built in a horseshoe around the bay, with brightly painted modern buildings and a long boulevard along the shore creating a charming environment. We checked into our very nice hotel and had pizza on one of the many cafes on the shore, then explored the town together. On the spur of the moment (much to my dearest’...

The Albanian center of Scutari is dominated from a citadel strengthened that it goes up again to the XV century, or rather the period in which the Republic in Venice dominated the city. Currently Scutari is a productive and commercial center of discreet importance of north-western Albania. the city to the slopes of the fortress, is ugly, dirty and degraded. the lake is very beautiful and with good restaurants

We crossed the border into Albania. It took us two hours at the
border but we finally got our stamps. Albania is
interesting. It's the second poorest country in Europe. 70%
Muslim. Our first rest stop made me laugh... bugs, toliets were
holes in the floor, dirt floors, and everyone drives a Mercedes.
Albania's average income is only 2000 euro. wow. We drove
through unpaved roads and potholes to make it to our hotel. Wow,
I didn't ex...

I was the only one who knew that this would be a goodbye that would last alot longer than i was telling people i would. Our trip back to the states was only to be for five weeks and then we were to return home to Albania. I say home because that is what it had become to me. The Klugeri family had become my family and Kreshnik, Jurgen and Genti had become like old best friends. Ferrit was the uncle i always wanted to have and the women were so fíng beautiful! But i knew, deep down inside it w...
