NOT TO BE MISSED............Portage Glacier is a glacier on the Kenai Peninsula of the U.S. state of Alaska and is included within the Chugach National Forest. It is located south of Portage Lake and 6 km (4 mi) west of Whittier. Portage Glacier was a local name first recorded in 1898 by Thomas Corwin Mendenhall of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, so called because it is on a portage route between Prince William Sound and Turnagain Arm. Portage Glacier may be...

Lindblad trips are on smaller boats than cruises (about 60 guests) and on every boat there are about 5 naturalists who know everything about the area you are traveling in. You get to travel on the coast and make frequent stops on land to explore. In Alaska we started in Sitka and traveled around the Inside Passage ending in Juneau. We saw a lot of wildlife: bears, moose, crabs, birds, killer whales, seals, sea lions, puffins, humpback whales, newts, etc. Another highlight was seeing glaciers ...

Our AA flight to Anchorage was quite pleasant actually...! I had the opportunity of sitting next to two ladies in their 80s but very young and vibrant and very lovable. Our landing itself was amazing.... so green and so untouched. I knew I'd like this place.

After returning from a long memorial day weekend in Anchorage with my best friend from high school (and flight attendant extrordinaire!) JoAnn, I was invited to participate as a Resident Director on the January 2009 Voyage of Semester at Sea. I am thrilled to have such an opportunity. This new journey combines my passion (international travel) and my career expertise (college student affairs).
This will serve as my public blog to record my adventures to share wit...

Our welcome to Alaska occurred in Ketchikan which is a wonderful small city to explore on foot. A tunnel not far from where our ship docked divided the city into two areas, and we had the chance to see both. First, we headed right (which may have been south). This is the touristy side. The shops are here (including Diamonds International where we started our free charm bracelets to which we have added charms in about five ports now). The attractions are here too....

This trip is one of many that are started by my travel buddy Carlos. He tends to come up with random cities and why we need to go there. Of course, the reason for Barrow, it is the northern most city in the United States, and there is a Mexican restaurant named Pepe's North of the Border. Because many of my trips are on stand-by basis it is often a challenge to get to where we want to go. This trip in particular because I had to use an airline that I have never flown...

So a lot of time has gone by, and I'm still promoting wildlife watching in my hometown. Some things have changed (don't call Jaime, for example), and others are the same. I'd like to recommend the bird walk tour to birders, especially beginners. For more serious birders, it is good to take a cruise to St Lazaria Saturday mornings with Allen Marine (high season), or come in the winter.I was going to put up photos, but technical issues cropped up and this site isn't worth the hassle. Sorry.

Long, but great day today!
Friends:
Enjoyed chatting with our new friends from Colorado Springs, who are on an Adventure Caravans 60-day Canada-Alaska tour, along with some Texans in their group. Great fun!
Also admired our Inuvik friends’ truck camper. I have to admit that the size and configuration of truck campers makes them excellent adventure-mobiles. I’m intrigued with them now.

Well, like the Steese Highway there is a road to Chena Hot Springs, appropriately called Chena Hot Springs road, haha. Which is probable in my top ten drives. Usually I can catch a moose or two on the drive, but not this time. But non the less a good place for a good drive.

I joined this guided tour due to the fact that I had never cold water kayaked. Bad mistake. I did not learn a thing about the aspects of cold water kayaking that could not have learned while simply kayaking myself. The best advantage of a guided tour is that it is all inclusive. They provide tents, food, and the kayak. So with that in mind I can honestly say it was worth the money.
My Kayak partner, the kayak was a tandem, was a lawyer from Las Vegas. He was quite the character. He wore a Ke...

Getting to sleep that night was incredibly difficult. I don’t know if the midnight sun or the fighter jets at the air force base seemingly right outside our window that disturbed me more!
The morning came too soon and we were to be at the train station first thing to board the Alaska Railroad for Seward. We arrived by cab just in time to check our luggage and to our shock discovered one of our suitcases was missing! My husband and ...

The ship pulled into Sitka, Alaska (not exactly sure of the date) and we didn't have any excursions planned. There didn't seem like that much to do there unless you were interested in Russian history. I'm sorry to all you Russians out there, but I'm not really interested in the battle forts and the struggles of the people in Alaska. There is no port in Sitka, so the ship has to use tender boats to get ashore. On our ride, we saw some sea otters. They were very cu...

This weekend we headed up to Alaska to cruise the Inside Passage. The trip started out well, with our hotel in Vancouver sharing a building with IHOP, making someone very happy. Our waitress Monica was charming, and made sure I didn't miss out on the final "drops of happiness" in the beer bottle. Friday morning we flew up to Prince Rupert, managing to hang on to our seats when they started kicking people off (the floods that cut Prince Rupert off by land means the plane had to fly with...
