Buckling Down and Getting a Job
posted by:

Combining work and global travel can be absolutely fantastic but not all destinations are sweet. My last job had been in a small African country where life was rather cruel - for most. A thousand people suffered cholera and a hundred died by it from drinking the water or eating the fruit grown near filthy waterways smothered with trash, garbage, and raw sewage. While average workers struggled to earn $2 a day, their President pocketed millions each week from off-shore oil royalties. That...

The CRAZY Flight from Seattle to Juneau
posted by:
Jul 02, 2008 - Jul 07, 2008
As I figured, when the alarm went off, I wanted to chuck it out the window.  Uuuuuugh.  But I had to get up and moving because this was the day I was most excited about - the cruise through a fjord, see glaciers, icebergs, and wildlife!  I hopped out of bed, got ready, and left…without Keith every skipping a snore! HA HA.  I left a few minutes early and wandered down by the cruise ship dock where I saw several bald eagles perched on the rocks.  Got...

Delta to Anchorage

Leigh and I were now on our own in the most awe-inspiring place in the world ~ Alaska.  After a hearty breakfast at one of Anchorage's small family-owned diners, I turned our rental SUV south towards the Kenai Penisula.    We were now riding along the Seward Highway, following the curvature of the Cook Inlet shoreline and Turnagain Arm, a narrow channel that is home to the most powerful bore tide (better known as a tidal wave) in the world.  A bore tide, in this parti...

Our blue and white twin-engine airplane took off from Iliamna and climbed to four-and-a-half thousand feet.  We angled to the northeast to follow a deep mountain gorge toward Anchorage. Long and narrow Lake Clark rolled beneath us while steep snow-covered peaks of the Aleutian Range towered into clouds on either side. We slipped through Lake Clark Pass and descended along the western shore of Cook Inlet.   Instead of landing at Anchorage International Airport, the flight c...

Well earlier this past week for three days it got down to below 40 degrees F.  Sure makes 10 below feel warm these days.  Seems that 40 below is a cut off for thing to start acting wacking.  My 'check engine' light went on for no apparent reason, cause I checked and it's still there.  You tires get frozen and it feels like you are driving on bumping ground when you know it's flat.  And then, it's just damn cold on you nose, fingertips and toes if you are out for too l...

Sea Daze!
posted by:

We were at sea the next day also and met a couple from Montreal and 2 ladies from Florida. Coming back from breakfast, we were on an elevator with a couple and a woman (not with them) when the woman put her hand on her mouth and started gagging. Oh NO! Well Bernie being the nice person she is, gave her a small plastic bag that held her bookmarks. Well the woman did end up puking in the bag, on Bernie's hands and lower arms, on the elevator floor, Bernie's bookmark she had just purchased&...

Day 1: Iditarod in Anchorage

We spent our first night at "A Wildflower Inn" B&B.  On Saturday, Erin and I got up before dawn, and then walked into town.  We could hear the sound of excited dogs for several minutes as we approached the staging area.  The canine athletes were as varied in their demeanor as their human counterparts.  Some seemed calm and focused -almost relaxed- as they contemplated what lay ahead for them.  Others were the picture of exuberance, barking and wagging th...

Juneau was breathtaking this evening, in more ways than one! The temp outside was 23F but felt way colder, so that's what I meant by breathtaking... walking to my car the cold air stung my throat. Freezing cold, but beautiful! It's hard to capture it with my camera, it doesn't take night pictures to well...maybe it's just me who can't do night pictures too well, who knows. But let me set the scene for you, then you can take a look at the few pictures I took. The fog was forming...

The Hot Springs made for some beautifuly frosty type covered trees from the steam rising from the springs and freezing on the trees and surrounding structures.  This time of the year the light available for pics is tough.  I still haven't figured it all out.  I like the black and whites and sometimes finding the contrast in some of the pictures that are still a bit grey can be brought out with using sepia.   But here's a few pics from New Year's day..

Couple years ago, my wife and I took a cruise to Alaska.  When we first ventured on this vacation, I thought...eh, wouldn't summertime be better spent drifting through some exotic islands.  I could swim, drink fruity alcoholic beverages with umbrellas poking out the sides, and flirt with the off chance I might contract malaria.  Turns out, this vacation kicked a whole lot of Alaskan ass!  I am new to this Trav Buddy thing, so I am not sure if I write about the whole trip...

As always all good trips must come to an end.  The hard part is turning the car around and the even harder part is holding off thinking of what you need to do for work the next day.  So the best thing is to drive slower and take a few pics for your travBuddies............  sc
