Alaska Backpackers Inn Anchorage Reviews
Conveniently located and ideal for meeting fellow travelers Aug 12, 2009
The Alaska Backpackers Inn is located very conveniently in the heart of Anchorage just minutes away from the Railroad Station and the main downtown area. Close enough to walk to any part of Downtown Anchorage, and yet distant enough from the noise and the traffic to enjoy the serenity of Anchorage.
The hostel provides free wi-fi access, linen and towels. Upon check in, a key card is provided for access to the room assigned. The shared rooms are small, yet sufficient. The only downside being that in the month of August, there was no heating in the rooms! It was not unbearably cold. But some warmth would definitely have been welcome.
The ideal place to meet fellow budget travelers, the hostel houses a recreation area in the basement.. complete with a fooseball table!!
There is a vending machine with snacks and sodas in the basement as well. But there are no water bottles present in the vending machines.
The kitchen is spacious and well stocked. The recreation room also has a television and a small library. The sofas and chairs in the recreation room were not very clean and looked slightly distasteful.
At $25 a night for a shared room, the hostel is reasonably priced. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. And the hostel itself consists of a huge stack of travel magazines and brochures which are very helpful.
Currently, the hostel is on a beautification drive! So campers are encouraged to let their creative instincts flow free and decorate the walls and doors of the hostel.
There is a day storage room in which bags can be stored for a day after the check out is complete. Cabs to the airport are arranged by the front desk staff on request. As an alternative, the bus depot is a 5-10 minute walk away. And there are regular buses to the airport from the depot.
All in all, convenient for a short 1-2 day stay in Anchorage for a backpacker.
