Alamo is a small town of about 3400 (up 75% since 2000) located along U.S. Highway 280, in Wheeler County in South Central Georgia. The population figure can be deceptive, however, because much of the increase is due to the Wheeler Correctional Facility; making the town's population 88% male. Alamo was established in 1890 as a stop on the Seaboard Airline Railroad and was named for the mission that was the site of the famous battle in the Texas Revolution> Alamo is the county seat of Wheeler County which was established in 1912 and was named for renowned Commander of Tennessee's Confederate Army, Joseph Wheeler. The town has a nice court house that was built in 1917 using a Neoclassical design by Frank Milburn. It is made of brick and has columns on all four sides. This courthouse replaced the one completed in 1913 which burned down. The current courthouse is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

There is a nice veterans' memorial located on the court house grounds. I feel it is important to remember the sacrifices made by our veterans and their contributions to our freedom and our way of life.
