Alamo is a decent sized town of almost 19,000 (up 27% since 2000) located along US Highway 83 near the intersection with US Highway 281 and the city of McAllen, in Hidalgo County in the South Texas Plains portion of far South Texas. It is one of many towns along the Texas Mexico Border in this area. The town was laid out in 1909 and incorporated in 1924 and was reportedly named for either the many Alamo Cottonwood Trees in the area or for the mission in San Antonio. Alamo is known for the many vegetable farms and citrus fields in the area, and is a popular winter resort/retirement community.
