Cheap place right at Shinatown Dec 15, 2012
I booked this hotel through and also the dearest friend of mine recommends this place. The hotel located right in the centre of busy and buzzing Chinatown. If you arrive from the KL centre train station from airport, it is only one stop from there, take LRT – stop at “Pasar Seni” cost RM1 only, or if you arrive by bus from Pudu Raya station, it is 5 minutes walking distance, passed one big hotel (I don’t remember the hotel name and then turn left, walk straight), otherwise ask someone on the street how to go to Petaling Street and everybody in Kuala Lumpur know the location. Location of the hotel is really good and convenient. Plenty of mini markets, hawkers centres, restaurants and hotels on it.

The hallway toward the reception counter is a bit small, very smoky and smells of tobacco and the lift to the room has no air condition (it has fan only), so a wee bit stuffy. The reception is okay, neither friendly nor informative, but my booking was ready, so off I go upstairs to check the room and I have to ask for the free internet connection even though it was stated in the booking.

The room is really really tiny (without any space for the luggage and no window), with twin single beds, and probably one foot space in between the bed, one piece of wood to put makeup and mirror, old television (not sure if it is working or not as I didn’t check it), air condition and even tinier bathroom with stand up shower. When I have shower the whole floor getting wet as no glass in between the shower, toilet and sink.

For single people it is suitable even though the room is very small, as I can put my luggage on the other bed, and use the second bed for sleep, however if it is two people, probably a wee bit difficult to move around as the room is really tiny and no window either.

The room itself neither clean nor dirty, but could be better if the room is freshly painted and dusted. No one change the bed sheet or towel, and nobody clean the room when I stayed there for a couple of nights. Nothing special about this place, just one of the cheap hotel rights in the center of Chinatown. Cost RM65 per night for single without breakfast. The hotel itself selling different types of food behind the reception counter with several tables and chairs in the back for eating and a nice music with it from morning till midnight. However, if you don’t want to have breakfast in the hotel, or if you think the choice is limited, plenty of food stalls outside the hotel from early morning to dusk, selling many different things caters to your taste buds.

The hotel also provide free luggage service free of charge, so you can go to exploring another city and then comeback to collect your luggage.

It doesn't seem like they have done anything to the place since I stayed there a couple of years ago. Still looks old and beat up. Location is still the best about the hotel I think.

Chinatown hotel Jul 02, 2011
I choose hotel Alamanda because I wanted a place to go when I arrived late in Kuala Lumpur. So I had booked the hotel before hand - and when I looked at this hotel stood out as significantly cheaper than other hotels in the same category. Because of the relative low price on online booking the hotel tends to receive fairly many guests on a regular basis. Hence if you come as a walk in guest you will probably be better of going to one of the similar hotels nearby.

It’s always strange if you say a hotel got a great location and a bad location at the same time. But this is actually the case for Hotel Alamanda. The hotel got a super central location in the very heart of Chinatown on Jalan Petaling. Jalan Petaling is the central street in Chinatown and home to a big street market and many Chinese restaurants. So when you walk out of the hotel door you will immediately be in the middle of all the street life of Chinatown. The flipside of this central location is the hotel is a bit hard to get to most of the day. When I arrived the taxi driver told me he could not drive to the hotel because there was a market going on outside it - and he was right - fortunately I got to the hotel so late that most the shops were about to close down so it wasn’t too difficult walking down the street - but I arrived just after midnight. If you arrive before this you will have to make your way down the busy street with all the stalls and limited space for your luggage. Similarly when you leave the hotel you might have to bring your luggage through the many stalls on the street before you can get a taxi for the train station - unless you leave early in the morning.

It is a bit strange arriving at the hotel - when you come to the hotel most of the façade is used by a shop - you’ll have to walk about 20 meters through a narrow corridor next to the shop before you can make your way into the hotel lobby. When you finally get there you should be met by a receptionist and down in the lobby area is a couple of computers which can be used to get online if you don’t want to use the free wifi in the hotel. Just before you get to the elevator you pass a small bar area where you can have a drink - though it seemed pretty empty every time I walked past it so it’s not the most atmospheric place to go for a drink before you go to bed.

Most of the rooms in the hotel got no windows - the only exceptions are some superior rooms which are facing the street. The lack of a window means there is only a limited access for fresh air into the rooms - so when I got into the room it smelled a bit damp from the humidity from the shower. Turning on the aircon and let it run for a few minutes should take care of the problem with the dampness of the room.

The room is very small for a twin room - there is only exactly enough space to put two beds in there - with about 20 centimeters separating the two beds. If you are two people in the room with lots of luggage the room will be a bit small - if you are alone it works fine since you can use the second bed to put your luggage on. The bathroom is about the same size as the room so you can save a little time by using the shower, sink and toilet at the same time in the morning if you are in a hurry.

Unfortunately there is no place in the hotel to go for breakfast so you’ll have to find something in the neighborhood.

Very cheap and basic but excellent location for markets Jul 04, 2011
This was the first hotel we stayed at after arriving in Kuala Lumpur after a 13hr flight. In hindsight, I should have booked something a bit more luxurious but my GF was keen on cutting costs. This place is dirt cheap, and consequently this is a no frills backpacking place. We had a 'superior double room' which was clean but dark, depressing and in need of refurbishment. The worst thing about the room was that if the air con wasn't on constantly, a strong smell of urine would suddenly appear. Not sure why but the smell was so overpowering it woke me up a few times! This hotel is based directly above the market, which is absolutely heaving between midday and 11pm and pretty noisy. That didn't really bother me as it adds to the experience. Staff at reception were pleasant, and even though the room was 'tired', it was cleaned regularly and the shower worked fine. Perfect place if you're on a shoe string or have been travelling a while. Wrong place after a long haul flight.
