Ala hotel Tankou Reviews
Contemporary tourist class for little money Oct 20, 2011
The Ala hotel is located west of Tankou, on the foot of Mt Huangshan, at a busy road leading to the bus station for entrance to the Yellow Mountains park.
Officially it has no star rating, but I'd consider it a decent three star hotel. There's a spacious contemporary lobby annex restaurant and there's a small shop too with beverages, snacks and useful stuff such as maps, rain ponchos etc... Prices at the shop are very reasonable and not much higher than at the supermarket across the road.
The elevator is a panoramic one, on the outside of the building. Even though there are only five floors, we got room nr 8403. The four refers to the fourth floor but I have no idea where the eight comes from.
It's a rather large but sparsely furnished room with queen size beds with a bedside table and a desk with a flat screen TV. There's also air-conditioning/heating and a kettle to boil water. And it was a pleasant surprise to have free WiFi!
Overall the room is pretty clean but there are large cracks in the wall with stains here and there. But I guess that's unavoidable with snow white painted walls.
The bathroom has a nice contemporary design with dark blue mosaic tiles and a walk-in shower. There's plenty of soap and shampoo, as well as a tooth brush and comb. The watering off of the shower is not too practical though, the sewer cannot take this much water at the same time and hence the bathroom turns into a swimming pool while showering.
Apparently this is a Chinese hotel. Their website has no English version at all and none of the staff speaks anything else but Chinese. Nonetheless the staff is very friendly and helpful and offers my Chinese friend plenty of advice on which route to take on mount Huangshan.
The restaurant downstairs only serves Chinese food. We didn't have breakfast but had a dinner which was very nice and also reasonably priced.
With a room rate of only RMB 156 per night (excluding breakfast) this is really good value for money
