For most, coming to Waikiki Beach is the thing to do when you first set foot on Oahu. For others however, it gets a little too crowded in Waikiki and the tourist overflow can get a little out of hand. The next best thing: head over to Ala Moana Beach Park. This is my personal favorite beach on the South Shore because it is usually less crowded and a lot cleaner. This is also a favorite for families because it seems to be more child-friendly. Their is a reef wall that creates a safe, calm lagoon for swimming. Across the wall is a great place for summer season surf and boogy-boarding. It is lifeguard protected and handicap assessable. There are two concession stands in case you get hungry. Adjacent to the beach park is Magic Island park which has lots of picnic areas and a jogging/walking trail. You will always see fishermen all along the edges. It also offers a fantastic place to watch the sunset and relax at the end of the day without all the hustle and bustle.

Ala Moana Beach is a nice family-friendly area. The beach is a cove, therefore there aren't many waves on shore, which makes it perfect for kids or weaker swimmers. If you do want waves, you can easily swim out past the reef. There are plenty of waves and surfers out there. This is a more touristy location though.

Across the street from the beach is Ala Moana Mall. The mall has no roof, except for in the stores. It's nice unless it begins to rain. Otherwise, it's just like any other mall with many shops and places to eat.
