Al Majed, a rare looking place to stay Apr 21, 2008

During my stay in April 2008 in Damascus, the capital city of Syria, I was guest at the unusual looking Al Majed Hotel. The hotel is strategically situated in the center of Damascus in a quiet street near the Yussef Al Azmen Square. The citadel, suqs and Omaijad mosque are on a nice stroll distance.
Actually, the hotel consists of two buildings. The more modern building has a reception with English speaking employees, a nice lobby and an elevator to the higher floors. Rooms are different in size and furniture, but the room I had was OK.
The restaurant is on the top floor of the other building with a not so spectacular view on the roofs of Damascus. The second building can be reached through the gate (see picture) and small street. The reception of the second building gives a more oriental feeling. The seats in the small street are a part of the hotelbar and are in a original admosphere (see picture).
If you're in to something else than a straight big hotel with series of rooms, I can warmly recommend the Al Majed.
