Al Areen Reviews
Many, many gazelles Mar 02, 2009
Al Areen is a conservation and wildlife park in Bahrain. Your visit consists of a bus tour, and a walk around the gardens near the entrance. The main focus of the park is desert animals and water birds, appropriately enough for a large desert island.
Entrance is 1BD, or about £2 at today's prices. Accessibility seems to be pretty good - there were a lot of people with buggies, and the bus made an extra stop closer to teh entrance to pick up someone with mobility problems. The toilets are spotless, and there is a nice little cafe area.
The animals are quite interesting, and the tour guide gave the tour in English and Arabic. He was also very willing to talk to us and explain things we had missed. All the animals seem to be very healthy and glossy coated, and most seemed to have loads of space. In fact the ostriches and flamingoes were pretty much roaming free. The tour guide explained that most of the animals are in their pens part time, and spend the rest of the time semi-wild as part of a breeding programme.
I don't normally like zoos much, but this did seem to be a good place to be a gazelle in. Definately worth a trip.
