'2nd City' Jul 05, 2008
Classed as Iceland's 2nd city, though not the 2nd largest, it is the biggest you will find outside the Reykjanes peninsula on the ring road.
For those travelling the ring road will be the best place to stock up on provisions and supplies, as you will find all the major types of shops and services here. Has a Bonus supermarket, my favourite, not for the food or prices, just for the bright yellow bags with the pink pig you get to carry your shopping in :D.
Nice little town to have a walk about, with the church up on the hill. Port is used for cruise ships, and is ice free all year round.
Came across the bus station here, though it was more like a rough car park at the end of a row of buildings, but there were information posters on bus times to Reykjavic and Eggilstadir.
Our reason for being here though was having decided to take our time ovet the 10 days, we had decided to give the wertern fjords a miss and had booked internal flights from Akureyri back to Reykjavic.
A small airport, though they are extending it now, as it could remain open during the volcanic ash cloud episodes, when Reykjavic and Keflavic were closed.
We had hired our car from Hertz and had no problem when booking to arrange for it to be dropped off here. There are 7 or 8 flights a day from Akureyri to Reykjavik, operated be Flugfelag Islands ( Icelandair's internal service).
We got there about 1-30pm, for our 4pm flight, didn't know how long it would take handing the car back, and when we went to check in they simply asked us if we wanted on the 2pm flight, giving us an extra couple of hours in Reykjavic.
