Akron is a town of about 1700 (steady since 2000) located at the intersection of U. S. Highway 34 and Colorado Highway 63 in Washington County in Northeast Colorado. Akron was established in the 1880s and incorporated in 1887. Akron was named after Akron, Ohio. Akron is the county seat of Washington County. Washington County was founded in 1887 and was named for President George Washington. The Washington County Courthouse was designed by architect John J. Huddart and was completed in 1909.

Akron has a nice historic district with a few buildings of historical and/or architectural interest. Akron has one building, the old Akron Gymnasium, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Akron is home to the very nice Washington County Historical Complex and has a nice veteran’s memorial located on the grounds of the courthouse dedicated to the veterans of the nation's military.
