AKINABALU YOUTH HOSTEL Feb 22, 2009
Akinabalu Youth Hostel is one of the most popular backpacker's lodges in kota kinabalu. It is conveniently located on Jalan Gaya( Gaya Street) where the famous Sunday Market takes place. A large common area on the second floor is where backpackers watch TV/DVD, eat at the dining table, use the computers with free internet access, or just laze around or sit by the windows and watch the activity below gaya Street. They serve light breakfast(bread toast and coffee/tea). The rates start at RM30/$usd15 for a room for two with shared bathroom. Cleanliness is average. The staff are very friendly and would assist you promptly when you need help. I admire their network connection with tour and transport operators in the area. They booked my trip to Mt. Kinabalu and so far I was satisfied with their service.

:-) Good priced, central, hostel, good starting point for Sabah :-) May 12, 2009
Every thing you could want from a S.E. Asia hostel:

Pretty central, or at most 10 minutes walk from the centre of KK.

Very friendly English speaking staff :-), helped me organise a few things and even leant me some gloves to go up Mt KK. Really warm gloves, as I’m sure you can imagine are quite difficult to locate 300km from the equator, but defiantly needed for the mountain.

The crowed (i.e. other guests) could have been a bit more friendly, which of course is not the hostels fault, plus it was during the rainy season and the hostel was generally pretty quite.

My bed was ultra squeaky and the traffic was quite loud (as you’d expect in Malaysia) but that’s about the only bad things I can say about this place.

They sell cuttlefish flavoured crisps (potato chips)! Unsure if this is a + or a –

Would defiantly recommend to other travellers :-) :-) :-)

Cheap but nothing fancy Feb 17, 2009
I stayed there during my climb to the famous Kota Kinabalu mountain and I must say that the price really surprised me.

The condition of the hostel isn't really great but they have a nice 'lobby' area where you can share a satellite TV with guest or sit by the window and watch the street. It is located at GAYA street and it is brimming with life on weekends as it is a bazaar on weekends.

They provide breakfast but I would rather go out and eat as they only provide 2 slices of bread and instant noodles. Nontheless if you're just lazy, you can just eat there itself.

They have 2 PC with internet and guest would have to take turns if they want to use the PC. Its free though.

The air cond isn't cold enough and if you're sensitive to noise, It might be very disturbing for you as it is located just beside the main road and cars travel heavily and the noise gets into the hostel. The brick walls just echos it louder.
