Shopping and eating by the harbour Feb 03, 2010
Aker Brygge is a complex by the harbour where both tourists and locals meet, especially in the summer. If you want to avoid the crowds when shopping, you will find a lot of different stores at the shopping mall that stretches through all the buildings. It’s a lot of restaurants too, both cheap (McDonald’s) and expensive (Lofoten – one of the best fish restaurants in town). You’ll also find hairdressers, bakeries, a movie theatre, skin care studios, a few small art galleries and bars. I even recommend you to pass one of the small bridges to the newly developed “Fjord City” Tjuvholmen where you’ll find even more restaurants and shops (and more coming). If you are lucky enough to visit Oslo during one of the few hot summer days, you’ll have a hard time finding a table in the sun (before 13:00 everyone sits on the East side, after 15:00 the West side). A lot of (financial) business offices are based at Aker Brygge and the traders, brokers and lawyers come out to play both during lunch time and after work. A good tip is to go to Bölgen & Moi at Tjuvholmen before 16:00 and grab a table outside – they serve nice food and you can for drinks until late. Great for people watching! For lunch you get a great deal at either Beach Club (try the American Breakfast deal) or Eataly (4 daily dishes incl. wine/beer/soda + coffee for approx NOK150). If you want to swim in the ocean you can hop on a ferry to Nesodden from the roundabout at Aker Brygge (turn right 50 metres up the main road to find the beach when you hit the pier at Nesodden) or one of the small yellow boats to Bygdöy – with one of the most popular beaches in Oslo called Huk. Nice walking/ running tracks at Bygdöy as well if you’re the sporty type! Some locals consider Aker Brygge as a tourist trap (especially during cruise ship season…), but the people who work here (like me) enjoy it too!

The final piece of the Scandinavian jigsaw
Upon arrival in Oslo by late-evening train from Lillehammer, what awaited me was a jaunt around the remaining Scandinavian capital city I had not hitherto visited. Already slightly attuned to the cos…Oslo City mall and Aker Brygge mall, amongst others, were mostly modern, elaborate affairs which served as a reminder of the city…
