Akamba Handicraft Coop Mombasa Reviews
Excellent Carved Wood Souviners Oct 07, 2008
Overall, what stands out in my mind is the high quality of the wood carvings. I was not prepared for the quality of work and friendliness of the workers and staff there. These people are all from the Akamba tribe and work outside the main warehouse and showroom in small huts and covered areas. Each worker is assigned a number and he is paid when an item is sold. The workers are not allowed to sell anything except through the showroom or they will be ejected from the coop. It must work pretty well because there are several thousand workers there and the coop has been in business for many years. Today as I was writing this review, I discovered this place has a web site and will mail the items to you when you buy online. Google it. I have a lot of pictures of the inside I am posting with this review. I took the pictures and emailed them to my daughter and let her pick out what she wanted.
